Capital Campaign | Wičhóuŋchaǧe

Planning for the Future

In 2019, the Maȟpíya Lúta’s Board of Directors initiated a master planning process to ensure that Maȟpíya Lúta could continue to thrive in the future. Several capital and operational needs were identified and prioritized. Through the Wičhóuŋčhaǧe Capital Campaign we set out on a path to address those needs and positively impact GENERATIONS of Lakȟóta families.

Wičhóuŋčhaǧe Campaign

Translated from Lakȟóta language, wičhóuŋčhaǧe means “a generation, lineage, ancestry … the growth of people.” It is the perfect reference to embody the spirit of Chief Red Cloud’s vision for the future; a vision that will come to reality through the WIČHÓUŊČHAǦE (Generations) Campaign.

This ambitious effort connects past and future generations by:

  • Preparing the next GENERATION of Lakȟóta leaders
  • Bridging GENERATIONS with welcoming and interpretive community spaces
  • Honoring GENERATIONS of Lakȟóta heritage and tradition

Despite recent winter storms affecting the Pine Ridge Reservation, Red Cloud School is starting the new year with positive news. Our students shined at the Lakota Nation Invitational, excelling in multiple competitions. Additionally, the Heritage Center received a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to create an exhibit showcasing Lakota artistic excellence. While recovery from the storms continues, we remain dedicated to supporting our community and students in the months ahead.

These stories reflect the power of community, perseverance, and faith.

Red Cloud is kicking off the school year with exciting developments. A $100,000 Opus Award will expand the grade school language immersion program, while a new Heritage Center is set to begin construction in 2023. With a generous legacy gift from Gene Simon, the $7.5 million facility will house a 13,000-piece Native American art collection. These initiatives are part of Red Cloud’s broader efforts to enhance its programs and facilities, strengthening our mission and community support.
