The Heritage Center Becomes Čhatkú Arts Center

News

We are honored to share an important moment: The Heritage Center has officially changed its name to the Čhatkú Arts Center, a transition that coincides with the opening of a new building designed to stand as a place of honor for Native artists and Native art.

The new name, Čhatkú (pronounced CHAHT-koo), is a Lakota word that translates to “place of honor.” The name emerged through a series of conversations and meetings with Lakota artists, whose voices and perspectives guided the process. Many names were thoughtfully considered, but Čhatkú rose to the surface as artists reflected on the meaning and purpose of the new building.

Those discussions centered on how the building sits on campus and how it faces the highway, serving as a forward-facing welcome to visitors and tourists. Artists spoke about the importance of visibility—of Native art and Native artists being seen, honored, and centered. The building itself was envisioned as a statement: a space that elevates Native creativity and signals respect to all who pass by.

In Lakota culture, a place of honor was always reserved for guests within our lodges. That teaching shaped the final decision. Just as visitors were welcomed and honored in our homes, Čhatkú Arts Center stands as a place where guests are invited in—while also honoring the artists whose work and voices are at the heart of the space.

While the name and building are new, the mission remains the same. Čhatkú Arts Center continues its commitment to uplifting contemporary Indigenous artists, supporting economic opportunities for Oglala Lakota creators, and providing meaningful educational experiences for students, families, and visitors.

The name Čhatkú reflects both purpose and place—a visible, intentional space of honor for Native art and Native artists at the heart of our campus and along the road that brings people here.
