This spring, the Čhatkú Arts Center at Maȟpíya Lúta presents Moving Beyond Bars: Reclaiming Identity Through Creative Expression, a powerful exhibition centering the voices and creativity of incarcerated women.
Featuring artwork by more than 45 women from the South Dakota Women’s Prison in Pierre and the Women’s Prison in Ocala, Florida, the exhibit reflects deeply personal journeys of reflection, healing, and self-expression. Developed through an intensive three-week arts residency led by Suzanne Costello and Ariadne Albright, participants engaged in visual art, movement, and writing—using creativity as a pathway to reclaim identity and tell their own stories.
The exhibition invites visitors to witness not only the challenges these women have faced, but the strength, resilience, and humanity that persist beyond systems and labels. Each piece offers a reminder that creativity can be a powerful tool for connection, healing, and transformation.
A public reception was held on Thursday, April 23 from 4:00–7:00 p.m., bringing community members together to engage with the work and reflect on the powerful stories being shared.
Moving Beyond Bars is on view from April 1 through May 15, 2026, in the Čhatkú Arts Center’s current gallery space in Drexel Hall on the Maȟpíya Lúta campus. As the final exhibition in this space before the transition to the new Čhatkú Arts Center building, it marks a meaningful moment—honoring the stories held here while looking ahead to a new chapter.
