This week, Mahpiya Luta elementary and middle school students, along with their teachers, gathered for a special Ash Wednesday Mass, marking the beginning of the Lenten season. The service, led by Fr. Peter Klink, invited the community to reflect on spiritual renewal and personal growth.
During Mass, Fr. Klink spoke about the significance of Lent within the Ignatian Catholic tradition, encouraging students and staff to embrace this time of reflection and transformation. “You will notice ashes on the foreheads of staff and students who have participated in communal prayer today,” he shared. “Those ashes should be a humble reminder to us all that spiritual depth—and being blessed in both our Lakȟóta and Ignatian Catholic traditions—is at the heart of who we are at Mahpiya Luta.”

He further encouraged the community to use this season as an opportunity for self-improvement and deeper connection with their faith. “Lent invites us to prayerfully reflect on what changes in our lives and habits might help us better walk the Lakȟóta Catholic walk—the Holy Red Road—that is meant to be a true blessing to all,” Fr. Klink said.
While Lent is a significant time for those who observe it, the message of self-reflection and growth is one that resonates with everyone. As we move through these weeks ahead, we are all invited to pause and ask ourselves: What habits do we want to change? How can we become better for ourselves and those around us?
No matter one’s spiritual path, this season offers a chance to grow in kindness, humility, and purpose. Let our hearts be open to the journey ahead.
