Maȟpíya Lúta Celebrates Strong Showing at 48th Annual Lakota Nation Invitational

Maȟpíya Lúta students delivered an outstanding showing at the 48th Annual Lakota Nation Invitational, earning championships, individual honors, and top finishes across a wide range of academic, cultural, and athletic competitions. With students competing in everything from athletics and arts to language and leadership events, Maȟpíya Lúta once again demonstrated the depth of talent and pride within its school community.

Several students led the way with championship performances. Tylyn Eagle Bull captured a 1st-place title in wrestling, earning a championship in her weight class through determination and skill. In skateboarding, sophomore Kylee Martin claimed the Best Trick award, while Maȟpíya Lúta’s all-girls skateboarding squad earned an impressive 2nd-place finish for Best Girls Team Overall.

In archery, Payton Garrett took home 1st place in the Middle School division, showcasing focus and consistency under pressure. On the cheer floor, Hayden Pourier was named All-Tournament, recognized for her performance and leadership throughout the competition.

Maȟpíya Lúta handgame teams also earned strong recognition across divisions. In the elementary division, Maȟpíya Lúta 1 was awarded Best Singers, reflecting strong voices, rhythm, and teamwork. In the high school division, Kimméla Šká was honored with the Best Dressed award for their pride and presentation, while Wakháŋ Lowáŋpi earned the Best Singers award, recognized for their powerful vocals and coordination.

On the basketball court, Maȟpíya Lúta celebrated major team success. The boys basketball team captured the LNI Championship in a thrilling double-overtime victory, with Memphis Brewer named Most Valuable Player for his standout performance. The girls basketball team continued its remarkable legacy, winning its 5th consecutive LNI Championship. Ashlan Carlow-Blount was named MVP, highlighting another dominant tournament run for the program.

Beyond the headline victories, Maȟpíya Lúta students earned multiple placements across a wide range of competitions throughout the week. Students proudly represented their school in the Art Show, archery, handgames, Tȟéča Wačhípi, cheer competition, business competition, the Lakȟóta Language Bowl, e-games, skateboarding, Knowledge Bowl, oral interpretation, and basketball.

The 48th Annual Lakota Nation Invitational remains a powerful gathering where schools come together to represent their communities, families, and nations. For Maȟpíya Lúta, this year’s success reflects not only competitive excellence, but the dedication, cultural pride, and collective spirit of its students, coaches, families, and supporters.
