Immersion students recently completed a meaningful hands-on project called the Seed Packet Promise, connecting language, culture, and environmental stewardship.
Each student created their own seed packet, labeled with the word Iwáhowaye, meaning “I Promise.” On the back, students wrote their commitments in Lakhótiyapi, describing how they will care for their seeds during planting and throughout the growing process. These promises reflect not only responsibility, but also a deep respect for the natural world.
Over the next two weeks, students will begin planting their seeds, putting their words into action as they nurture and observe their growth.
This project is part of the school’s quarterly theme, Taking Care of Unčí Makȟá—Grandmother Earth. Through this experience, students are strengthening their connection to language, land, and the values of care and responsibility that guide both.
