From behind the camera to behind the canvas, Joaquina Pourier (Class of 2021) is building a creative voice rooted in Lakota culture, memory, and place.
Working in both photography and acrylic painting, Pourier creates pieces that celebrate the stories, landscapes, and traditions that continue to shape Lakota life. Whether capturing a fleeting moment through her lens or bringing a scene to life with paint, her work reflects a deep connection to community and identity.
Recently featured in the Čhatkú Arts Center’s Artist Spotlight series, Pourier shared the inspiration behind her work and the creative process that continues to shape her journey as an emerging Lakota artist.
“These entries are inspired by Lakota life, memory, and place. I wanted to show pieces of culture that carry meaning, from the land and traditional homes to powwow regalia and the strength of community. Each entry holds a story about where we come from and what we continue to carry forward.”
Her creative process begins with observation and lived experience.
“My creative process is based on memory, observation, and connection to culture. I start with an idea from the land, Lakota life, or powwow, then use color, line, and imagery to turn that inspiration into a visual story. Photography lets me preserve a real moment.”
Since graduating from Maȟpíya Lúta, Pourier has continued to pursue both her education and her artistic passions. She is currently studying Criminal Justice at Western Dakota Technical College and was recently named a recipient of the Metallica Scholars Initiative, recognizing her commitment to academic excellence while continuing to grow as an artist.
As a Maȟpíya Lúta graduate, Joaquina represents a new generation of Lakota artists who are preserving culture, sharing perspective, and telling meaningful stories through art. Her journey from student to emerging artist reflects the creativity, resilience, and cultural pride that continue to flourish within our alumni community.
