On Monday, December 16, 2024, Mahpiya Luta Elementary School students gathered at the Paul “Dizzy” Trout Field House to perform Christmas songs in Lakota for their families, friends, and staff.
After weeks of dedicated practice, the program began with the kindergartners singing “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” in Lakhota. Each grade had a turn on stage, showcasing their hard work and spirit. The fourth graders delivered a beautiful skit depicting the birth of Jesus, followed by a festive rendition of “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer”—also performed in Lakota.
We were honored to have special visitors from the Oglala Sioux Lakota Nursing Home join us for this special day, adding even more warmth and joy to the celebration.
To close the event, all grades came together to sing and share a Lakota prayer song, creating a heartfelt and memorable moment for everyone in attendance. It was a wonderful way to celebrate the season and conclude the semester.
With students and teachers now off for Christmas Break, we at Mahpiya Luta wish you and your families a safe and peaceful holiday season.
