The annual Mahpiya Luta Wachipi is a school-wide celebration featuring powwow dances and social dances. Some students wear their traditional regalia, while others dance in their everyday attire. This event also serves as an opportunity for young women to compete for the honor of serving as Mahpiya Luta royalty.
Each year, three students are crowned as Wachipi royalty. Many Native communities and organizations have their own royalty, and those selected are expected to serve as ambassadors. The Mahpiya Luta royalty will actively engage with their community by attending events, participating in celebrations, promoting Mahpiya Luta, and sharing their culture with others. As role models, royalty members are expected to show respect for elders, maintain a positive public image, and uphold cultural traditions. This includes wearing full regalia during grand entries, participating in dances, and representing their community with grace and dignity at all times.
Congratulations to this year’s incoming royalty:
- Little Miss Mahpiya Luta: S’ke Lute Win Giago
- Jr. Miss Mahpiya Luta: Gracie Banks
- Miss Mahpiya Luta: Tonirae Ghost Bear
These young women are ready to serve and will represent Mahpiya Luta with pride and beauty this year!
