A Journey from Mahpiya Luta Student to Assistant Director of AmeriCorps
Maȟpíya Lúta has always been more than just a school for Christi Sioux Bob; it’s been a community that shaped her aspirations and values. Now, as Assistant Director of AmeriCorps, an Administrative and Curriculum Specialist with the Dual Immersion Program, and a Director of the Lakota language program, Christi has come full circle—returning to give back to the institution that once gave her so much.
A Return Home to Mahpiya Luta
Christi’s journey at Mahpiya Luta began long before her career. “This is where I went to school my whole life,” she says, reflecting on her upbringing and education within the Pine Ridge community. Her first role at the school was in 2015, where she worked for a year before leaving to pursue further education. In 2021, Christi returned, ready to contribute her skills and experiences to Mahpiya Luta and the broader community.
The New Role and Responsibilities
In her current role, Christi manages a variety of tasks essential to the success of the AmeriCorps program. Her day-to-day duties include recruiting, fingerprinting, e-grants management, interviewing, and collaborating with colleagues on budget planning. Through this work, she not only ensures smooth operations but also fosters a supportive environment for participants in the program.
Inspiration Behind Her Career Path
Christi was drawn to AmeriCorps because of the significant impact the program had on her own life. “The AmeriCorps program helped me decide what I wanted to do with my future,” she shares. “It played a big role in clarifying my goals when I was feeling uncertain.” Now, in her leadership role, she aims to inspire others by showing them the opportunities that AmeriCorps can offer.
Giving Back as an Alumna
As a Mahpiya Luta alumna, Christi finds meaning in serving her school and community. “I really wanted to give back because I understand what this school is about. It’s such a positive environment to be a part of,” she says. Her connection to the school is deeply personal, and she feels fortunate to be in a position where she can make a difference.
Growing in the Role
Having studied business, Christi is eager to expand her professional skills, especially in time management and balancing multiple responsibilities. She recognizes the challenges of leadership but is excited about the growth opportunities that come with it. “I’m learning how to juggle multiple responsibilities without letting stress take over,” she says, embracing the personal and professional development that comes with the role.
A Vision for Mahpiya Luta’s AmeriCorps Program
Christi has ambitious goals for the future of Mahpiya Luta’s AmeriCorps program. She hopes to encourage more alumni to apply for positions within the program, engaging not only graduates but also the Pine Ridge community at large. “The program offers great benefits, like the award grant that can go toward education. It’s a valuable opportunity for young people still deciding on their future paths,” she explains.
For Christi, AmeriCorps is a vital resource that helps individuals clarify their career interests. “This program allows people to explore what they want to do with their future,” she says. It offers participants hands-on experience, teaching essential life skills and exposing them to different career paths in a way that’s both educational and impactful.
What Makes Mahpiya Luta Special
When asked what sets Mahpiya Luta apart, Christi speaks warmly about the welcoming atmosphere. “The people make it unique. Even with new volunteers, we quickly become friends. Every day on campus, there’s someone who’s genuinely happy to see you,” she shares. This sense of camaraderie is a defining quality of Mahpiya Luta, fostering a community where everyone feels valued.
Outside of Work
When she’s not at Mahpiya Luta, Christi enjoys staying active and creative. She loves working out, playing basketball, reading, and experimenting with new recipes in the kitchen. Her hobbies keep her balanced and energized, allowing her to bring her best self to her role in the AmeriCorps program.
Looking Ahead
Christi is excited to welcome new members to the AmeriCorps program. She’s ready to support their journeys and to continue growing alongside them, building a program that benefits both its participants and the wider community.
Through her dedication, Christi embodies the spirit of service and growth that defines Mahpiya Luta and AmeriCorps. Her journey from student to leader is a testament to the transformative power of education, community, and the desire to give back.
